Dodge and Burn by Angieq

Safe dodge & burn for Photoshop.
Simple, easy...
Create new layer, fill with white. Helps to name your layers of course.. For burn I use "Multiply" and I change the "Layer Mode" (Green Arrow) to Multiply as well. I paint my darkened areas using like 10% opacity in black.

Create another layer, fill with black. This is our "Color Dodge", changing the layer mode as well and then I can paint using white, set it about the same opacity.

Gimp version.
Same exact trick.. Red Arrow..!

Paint.net version
Pink Arrow, brings up the layer properties. Here we can control multiply & color dodge.

Simple safe dodge & burn, very handy for making jeans along with various other shading you may want to safely place away and use again and again and again...!

As you change each layers properties or mode the white & black layers appear opaque.

Satin Affect by bi_bi_love

Open a new image with your normal settings.
Set the foreground colour to Black and the background to White (often the default)

Select the blend the blend tool and set the Mode to “Difference” and the rest of the settings as below.

Sweep the cursor back and forth across your page with longer and shorter strokes.
Experiment with length, angle and number of strokes

Once the pattern is a ‘crumpled’ as you want, apply the Gaussian Blur.
Filers-Blur-Gaussian Blur

Set the radius to somewhere between 20 and 30, lower is better until you are used to the result as you can repeat it easily with “Ctrl+F”

Next you need to apply the Edge tool
Filters-Edge Detect-Edge
Make sure it is set to “Smear” other than that the settings should default to those below.

Next invert your colour
Colors-Invert
And you are basically left with white satin.

All that remains (unless it was white satin you wanted), is to colour it in.

Select Colors-Colorize
The colorize tool will default to Hue – 180, Saturation – 50, Lightness – 0
Make sure the Preview box is checked then you can see all the action happening in the background.

Hue – think of the slider as moving across the spectrum from Red to Violet
(ROYGBIV)

Saturation – I think of this similar to the number of coats of paint

Lightness – of the colour. Setting to around -50 gives a solid colour.

Click OK when you are happy and….

A lot of this is trying and experimenting with most steps.

I’ve used it quite a bit, but never saved the result it is pretty easy to do with a little practice and this gives any other designs using satin or recolours a more unique feel.

Brushed cotton/velvet effect by bi_bi_love

Step 1... open your mesh, template or wherever you usually start from. I have some basic templates (some thanks to Hunter).

Step 2 ... I use the Alpha to selection tool in the layers toolbar (you can call the toolbar up by pressing F7). The way my templates are set up this will select the filled area on the highlighted layer.

Step 3 ... Select the base colour you want (no, the outfit on the go is not green).
Then use the bucket fill tool to fill the selection.

Step 4 ... In the 'Filters' menu, select 'Noise' then 'RGB Noise ...'

This brings up a separate box to adjust the settings of the noise

Just leaving the settings at the default values works nicely, but experiment with the settings and view in the preview window, when happy click okay and....
